Westfront Nieuwpoort
Visit the equestrian statue of Albert I and discover the story of the flooding of the polder plain during World War I.
At the end of October 1914 the Belgians threatened to lose the Iron. This changed when Karel Cogge and Hendrik Geeraert, under the leadership of King Albert I, decided to flood the polder plain. This forced the enemy to withdraw, which eventually led to the successful final offensive in 1918.
Holiday Suites fact Below the monument is a hypermodern visitor centre, where you can operate the locks of 1914 via an interactive computer game.
