Basilica of the Holy Blood
In 1923, the Basilica of the Holy Blood was elevated to the status of Basilica because of the special veneration of the Holy Blood.
The Basilica consists of a lower chapel and an upper chapel. The lower chapel is dedicated to Saint Basil and is a rare example of Romanesque architecture in the coastal region. The oratory, which is soberly decorated, is surmounted by stone vaults resting on heavy pillars.
The Ter Steeghere staircase leads to the upper chapel. The relic of the Holy Blood that was supposedly brought to Bruges by some crusaders is kept here.
